Ionic liquids are an exciting class of additives for lowering the melting point of Mg(BH4)2. Prior work in the magnesium battery field has demonstrated the use of ionic liquids in melting Mg(BH4)2 at temperatures as low as 70°C. In this work, we analyze ionic liquids with melting points ranging from -10°C to 80°C, and ionic liquid chemistries featuring both borohydride and other anions. We systematically examine the effect of ionic liquid additives on the melting point of Mg(BH4)2. Additionally, we analyze the desorption of gases from the Mg(BH4)2/additive systems on first melt and upon subsequent hydrogen load/unload cycling.
