A novel aryloxymethyl acetal group has been developed to effectively protect alcohols on a variety of substrates. This protecting group is stable under basic, acidic, and reducing conditions and can be selectively cleaved using mild gold(I) catalysts. The facile synthesis of the protecting group requires two steps and features a copper-free Sonogashira cross coupling. The protecting group has been successfully coupled with primary and secondary alcohols and optimization of the gold (I)-catalyzed deprotection is ongoing.<br/>
