Methane (CH4) and carbon-dioxide (CO2) generated through the anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste can be upgraded to syngas (hydrogen (H2) & carbon monoxide (CO)) via the dry reforming process (DRM). Synthetic fuels and oxygenated chemicals can be produced from syngas using oxo- and/or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. DRM typically occurs at temperatures greater than 800 οC. Such high temperature requires huge energy input and causes catalyst sintering, this problem can be prevented through the design of low temperature reforming catalysts. In our work, we evaluated the effect of metal content on the performance of series of Pt/CeZrO2 catalysts for low temperature dry reforming. The catalysts were contained different Ni (0.6-2.68 wt%) or Mg (0.5-2.0 wt%) content. The metal support catalysts were prepared using the co-precipitation and the incipient wetness method. The catalysts were characterized using temperature programmed reduction (TPR), powdered x-ray diffraction and N2-physisorption. Increasing Ni content helps the reducibility of the mixed oxide support but increased the reduction temperature of the NiO while Increasing the Mg loading increased the reduction temperature of the mixed oxide support. Temperature-programmed reaction results showed that an increase in Ni content favored the methane conversion at lower temperatures while increasing the Mg content resulted in an increase in methane conversion temperatures. Long-term reaction study (10.2 hours) at 430 οC was carried out using the best catalyst (Ni-2.68wt%), an average CH4 and CO2 conversion of 8.0% and 13.8% respectively was obtained and H2:CO ratio of 0.44. The amount of carbon formed during this reaction (5.5E-04 g/gcat/hr) was lowed compared to literature values. All the catalysts studied in this work gave 10% CH4 and CO2 conversions at low temperatures (400-500 οC), this indicates that they could be used in intensified processes at low to moderate temperatures.
