Selective and direct conversion of methane to methanol at mild condition is one of the great challenges in catalyst field. Periana catalyst (the Catalytica system) is known as the best catalyst for methane functionalization so far, it suggests that Pt-compounds are prominent for the catalytic oxidation of methane. In that process, methane CH4 is converted with 90% conversion and 81% selectivity into methyl bisulfate MBS. However, until now, many arguments still remain about not only the reaction mechanism, but also the role of a ligand. According to a recent study, (bpym) ligand is proved not to be mandatory for high activity; even it actually seems to be detrimental for the catalytic activity. Moreover, simple platinum salts (such as K2PtCl4 and PtCl2) are concluded be stable, selective and active under reaction conditions superior to Periana catalyst. In our research, we studied about an efficient Pt-based homogeneous catalyst system having DMSO as a ligand and how to enhance its catalytic activity. (DMSO)2PtCl2 showed an excellent catalytic performance for both the MBS yield and the turnovers. This higher catalytic performance of (DMSO)2PtCl2 is due to the DMSO ligand on the Pt, which increases the solubility of the Pt species in oleum as well as a low dissociation energy of DMSO from the Pt center. And, although (DMSO)2PtCl2 is deactivated to PtCl2 after the reaction like the other Pt compounds with chloride ligand, it can be reactivated quite simply by the addition of DMSO.
