Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) was successfully used in a multi-electron transfer reduction reaction to reduce hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] to trivalent chromium [Cr(III)]. The process involved generating the catalyst in which FMN was reduced to FMNH<sub>2</sub> during a photoirradiation process during which two electrons and two protons were generated. Following the photoirradiation process, the FMNH<sub>2</sub> was reacted with Cr(VI) in an anaerobic atmosphere and in the dark with reactions taking place at ambient temperature and a pH of 6.5. Reduction rate constants were measured. The results indicate that rational organization of FMN to mediate multielectron transfer is highly effective toward the environmental remediation chromium contamination.
