Redox active ligands have been studied with uranium over the past decade which led to discovery of transformations that are not possible with a uranium center such as two electron processes. The capability of redox active ligands are able to harness electron density in the backbone which can led to reactivity that the metal cannot perform on its own. However, little progress has been made for thorium regarding reactivity with redox active ligands. Thorium not being redox active, the chemistry happens at the interface of the ligand, rather than the metal. Here within, we disclose the synthesis and characterization of a family of thorium pyridine(diimine) complexes and investigation of the reactivity using atom transfer reagents for multiple bond metathesis.
