In this study, the synthesis and characterization of different metal ions bound to the amino acid, histidine, has been documented; specifically, the metals zinc, nickel, and cobalt. The study observes the synthetic procedure to produce crystal products and discusses the evaporation technique for crystal isolation. In terms of characterization, the pKa values, magnetic moment, UV-Vis spectra, and IR spectra have been analyzed and documented. The pKa of the pyrrole hydrogen is known to be around 6. Our study illustrates that the pKa of the cobalt metal complex increases as expected; however, the nickel and zinc metal complexes decreased in pKa value significantly. The IR spectra suggests that the carboxylate is attached to the metal in all three complexes. The UV-Vis Spectra revealed octahedral complex structure for all three metals.
