The development of iron-based catalysts that can affect the Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction between alkyl halides and unactivated aryl boronic esters is described. Using a combination of monoanionic ligands and the appropriate base, catalytic cross coupling reactions can be incurred for a variety of alkyl halides and aryl boronic esters. Application of the new cross coupling reaction for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients will be described along with the mechanistic insights that led to new ligand design principles.  <br/>
