Do you ever look back and ask yourself why nobody ever told you certain things? Or look back and realize that people did tell you, but you just weren’t ready to listen? Reflecting on my journey over the past five years from Assistant to Associate Professor has taught me 5 important lessons I would like to share with (future) junior faculty: 1) Just say “No”; 2) Be your own advocate; 3) Manage your manager; 4) It’s ok to fire students; 5) These really will be your lifelong friends/colleagues.
