Bismuth oxyhydroxyphosphate (Bi3O[OH][PO4]2, BOHP) is a wide-band gap semiconductor material recently found to rapidly degrade perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) when added as a slurry to UVC photoreactors. The key characteristics of BOHP microparticles which impart strong photocatalytic activity towards PFOA with relative selectivity, as well as its ability to degrade and mineralize other important PFAS species remain unknown. Herein, we report on our investigation into BOHP’s mechanisms, including the influence of surface phenomenon, PFAS functional moieties and chain length, and complex water matrix contents. Additionally, BOHP has been incorporated into a commercial photocatalytic system (Purifics Photo-cat) for application to ex-situ groundwater treatment; system performance and contrast to bench-scale experiments will be presented.
