Whether you work in academia or industry, one thing we all have in common is the desire to protect the health and well-being of researchers so everyone goes home healthy and safe every day. University laboratory safety awareness and practices have improved steadily, however, with a transient student population and at times insufficient resources and inadequate safety structure, developing and sustaining a positive safety culture remain a challenge. In 2012 Dow launched an initiative to improve university laboratory safety awareness and practices. The Dow Lab Safety Academy is the result. It is a series of free on-line videos leveraging key elements of Dow’s best-in-class safety practices. The Dow safety mindset is based on driving behavior towards incident prevention, sustained by renewed employee engagement and the responsibility to provide a safe work environment to employees.  This presentation will provide an overview of the Dow Lab Safety Academy efforts to enhance awareness of safety practices in academic research laboratories and promote a safety mindset in the future workforce of the chemical community. Knowing and having used correct safety protocols throughout their academic laboratory experiences eases the students’ transition to their future employers.
