It’s common for a meteorologist to report that the temperature or precipitation will be above or below normal. But, in a world of climate disruption caused by anthropogenic global warming, what is “normal”? Or, is there a “new normal”? Climate disruption has created a new world—a warming world of melting ice, rising and acidifying seas, more extreme weather events, and changes in biota, among other disruptions. The “new normal” is change. Change is inexorable, but adapting to the new world and mitigating the continuing disruption as much as possible are tasks that humans, given the will individually and collectively, can undertake. A few possibilities, none of them particularly novel or original, will be suggested.
