Competitive adsorption between methane and CO2 is the key point for the activity of dry reforming of methane. Ni/ZrO2 catalyst showed high activity for low temperature DRM reaction, while after prior adsorption of CO2, the activity decreased. In order to investigate the effect of competitive adsorption between methane and CO2 at low temperature, the in situ DRIFTS experiments, and temperature programmed reaction with online mass spectrometer were carried out, and it was found that the prior adsorption of CO2 could restrain the activity of Ni/ZrO2 catalyst. The results of temperature programmed DRM reaction showed that the intensity of CH3 species (1354, 1489, 1442 cm-1) increased with temperature (see in Fig a) [1,2]. After prior adsorption of CO2 at room temperature, when the DRM reaction was proceeded, it was difficult to observe the CH3 species at 50 oC and it appeared at 200 oC (Fig b). Whereas, after prior adsorption of methane, the CH3 species was clearly observed at 50 oC. This phenomenon indicated that CO2 could cover on the active site for deactivation, thereby restrain the decomposition of methane.
