Methane is the main component of natural gas which is often used directly as fuel.[1] Therefore, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emission and the greenhouse effect, the improvement of the utilization value of methane is important.[2-3] However, it’s well-known that it is a big challenge to active the C-H bond of methane and form new C-X (X=O, C, etc) bond, which attracts much attention.[4] Ni-Cu/MoO2 catalyst was prepared using nickel and copper as active components. It is found that the reaction of methane and water can produce ethanol selectively over Ni-Cu/MoO2, and a good yield (925 μmol/L) was obtained at 240○C, 2.5MPa. CH3CH2- (m/z=29), OH-(m/z=17) species was detected by online mass spectrometry (Figure 1a). C-OH species, C-O species, C-C species and CH3Ox species was detected by pseudo in situ XPS (Figure 1b). It means that the reaction of methane and water can directly produce ethanol over Ni-Cu/MoO2.
