In this presentation, we report the design and synthesis of a series of water-soluble perylene dyes that can form supramolecular host-guest complexes with CB[8] through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. The fluorescence emission of these dyes is very low in aqueous solvent due to the aggregation effect. Upon encapsulation with CB[8], the fluorescence emission of these dyes increases dramatically attributed to the interruption of the aggregation. Interestingly, the binding affinity and optical properties of the resulting complexes are affected by the chemical structures of the dyes such as the number of binding units, the distance between two binding units, and the substituents. These host-guest complexes with different binding affinities can serve as fluorescent probes for a range of CB[8]-binding guests.
