K-12 teachers, particularly high school science teachers, often inherit stockpiles of materials, including chemicals, from their predecessors or colleagues. Facing an unsorted storage area is a task for which many new teachers are not prepared. This talk will present a “mock safety sort” activity that has been used for more than a decade in a science methods course. Typically used as a first safety activity, the pre-service teachers are suddenly confronted with a complex and challenging task for which they are generally under-prepared. When used as a wrap-up activity, there is a chance to discuss any lingering issues that have arisen as students worked through other safety topics in the course.
