Rates of production and utilization of molecular electronic devices are estimated to increase significantly in the coming years. The integration of organic-light emitting diodes (OLED) and similar devices into the electronics industry will become mainstream for applications related to wearable electronics, energy conversion devices, and display technologies. New, multifunctional materials are needed to enhance stability and optoelectronic performance of the materials used in these devices. The synthesis and exploration of push-pull compounds with a thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTz) core, known for its photochemical stability and rigid planar structure, can lead to an improvement and continued development of materials for current OLEDs and energy conversion devices. New asymmetric push-pull TTz dyes have been explored that give rise to materials with high quantum yields, large Stokes shifts, and strong photoinduced, intramolecular charge-transfer. Push-pull TTz materials can be synthesized using a mixed-pot synthetic approach using the condensation of two different aromatic aldehydes with dithiooxamide. The synthesis of a TTz compound with diphenylamine (donor group) and carboxaldehyde (acceptor group) using a simple one-step reaction and purification is presented. The asymmetric TTz material shows thermo-oxidative and fluorescence stability, and high quantum yields. In addition, this TTz material shows excellent optoelectronic properties in the solid state, and is highly attractive for a wide range of applications including as a molecular sensor or for molecular electronics.
