The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) chemistry club focuses on science education outreach activities in Western Colorado and professional development activities for Colorado Mesa science majors. In addition, the CMU chemistry club strives to build a collegial community where students of the chemical sciences can celebrate their love of science, build professional relationships, and socially connect with other science majors. An ACS student chapter previously existed on our campus (when CMU was a much smaller institution). Two years ago, we re-activated our chapter and have worked on building a model for our chemistry club that will be sustainable for years to come. Here, we discuss the challenges of maintaining an active chemistry club in a remote, rural area. We also talk about how we approach professional development and fundraising activities to make sure that our chemistry club provides a bridge to post-baccalaureate education and careers for our chemistry majors. Lastly, we highlight our science education outreach activities in the Grand Junction community and local schools.
