Nanoparticles are widely present in the natural environment. Their surface reactivity, redox ability and adsorption properties are related to geochemical processes. The research on thermodynamics of interaction between nano oxides and small gas molecules are evoked by development of gas adsorption calorimetry. In this study, we have investigates the energetics of ethanol and carbon dioxide adsorbed on surfaces of nanoscale anatase, rutile and g-alumina particles. The zero-coverage adsorption enthalpies are measured. The results indicate the ethanol adsorption is generally the most exothermic compared with carbon dioxide and water vapor adsorption. The isotherm and differential enthalpies with step-wise patterns represent the different surface feature of different oxides surface. The changes of surface structure after adsorption have been identified by Raman spectroscopy. These thermodynamic evidences indicate that ethanol and other organics could protect mineral oxide surfaces from reaction with aqueous solutions. These effects could also have impact on crystal growth, dissolution, and biomineralization.<br/>
