<br/>Emission standards for vehicles in the United States and Europe have been developed over the years to achieve better than a 99% reduction in regulated gaseous pollutants: hydrocarbons (HCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and CO, especially for engines with stoichiometric exhaust.<br/><br/>However, for lean diesel exhaust many novel aftertreatment efforts have been applied over the past several decades. For NOx emissions the ammonia SCR technology has recently been very successful. However, before that development, about twenty years ago, considerable research using non-thermal plasma-catalyst systems was carried out. Such research using zeolitic catalysts for automotive emissions control of lean exhaust will be reviewed. In addition, more recently a number of improvements in plasma systems have led to a renewal of environmentally-based plasma research that will be discussed. The success of some of these approaches has led to more interest in understanding plasma-based applications.
