Palladium-catalyzed C-H activation has proven to be a useful tool for the modification of simple organic compounds into synthetically valuable compounds. Recently, the use of carbon dioxide was demonstrated as a viable strategy for selectively directing gamma C-H activation of primary and secondary aliphatic amines. Allylamine motifs are an important class of compounds with numerous pharmaceutical applications. Presented within is a strategic employment in which carbon dioxide, in the form of dry ice, is used as a transient directing group to selectively activate gamma C-H bonds of primary and secondary allylamines with subsequent functionalization.
