Active material crossover through the ion exchange membrane leads to the self-discharge or loss in capacity in a redox flow battery. This presentation discusses a in-situ technique that can be used to measure the self-discharge rate due to the crossover of either the negative or positive active ions in a redox flow battery.  The technique was applied to measure the self-discharge rate in a hybrid hydrogen vanadium regenerative fuel cell due to the crossover rate of V<sup>+5</sup> and/or V<sup>+4</sup> through various perfluorosulfonic acid membranes used.
