January 2019 is the start of the International Year of the Periodic Table, celebrating 150 years since Mendeleev published his. In celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table, the Gordon College ACS Student Chapter sponsored a poetry contest for students and community members to write a haiku using nothing but element symbols from the periodic table. The symbols D and T were also included since they are internationally known as the two heavier isotopes of hydrogen. The two letter symbols must be written in proper style, upper case letter then lowercase. The goal of this contest was to spread awareness about the International Year of the Periodic Table to a large audience, including those not involved in the Department of Chemistry. Three prizes were awarded: a periodic table blanket, a periodic table puzzle and periodic table book.
