Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have high chemical and thermal stability as well as lipophilic and hydrophilic properties. As a result of these properties, PFAS are useful chemicals for various applications including polymers, surfactants, film-foams in fire extinguishers, textiles, and coatings. Due to their widespread use and persistence to degradability, these chemicals have been detected in ground and surface water, waste water, wildlife and human serum. The toxicological impacts of PFAS is a big concern and in fact, several studies have implicated PFAS as a possible cause for health problems including cancer and reproductive toxicity.  This study presents an environmentally friendly approach for the removal of persistent per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using paramagnetic ionic liquids. Persistent PFAS contaminants including Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) can be extracted into paramagnetic ionic liquids and separated from the aqueous phase by using a magnet, alleviating the use of organic solvents for extraction. The recycling of paramagnetic ionic liquids for use in multiple extractions was investigated.
