Dendrimers are symmetrically branched macromolecules that display a selected functional group on the tip of each branch. This allows for the multivalent effect, or the property for multiple copies of one entity to bind multiple receptors of another. Because dendrimer composition is highly flexible, the hypothesized biological applications are numerous, ranging from gene delivery to enhancing solubility and improving drug delivery. This research focuses on the optimization of an eight-step synthetic pathway of an octavalent dendrimer. Thus far, the synthesis of this molecule has been problematic, resulting in low yields and insufficient purity. This project will focus on modification of the reactions such that greater efficiency, higher yields and improved purity result. Once optimized, future work will be undertaken to add various oligosaccharides to the octavalent dendrimer core, creating glycodendrimers with potential biological activities.
