Previous evidence suggests that lumazine has photodynamic cancer therapy applications and that the irradiation of lumazine results in cell death. There are two known competing mechanisms for cell death, both of which may contribute to cell death from lumazine. Type 1 cell death is the result of an excited state electron transfer from lumazine to DNA, and Type 2 cell death is the result of an excited state energy transfer from lumazine to oxygen creating the highly reactive molecule singlet oxygen (1O2). We have shown that lumazine does produce singlet oxygen, therefore at least some of the cell death may be attributed as Type 2. The dependence of the oxygen concentration, the lumazine concentration, and the pH on the quantum yield of 1O2 was examined. The 1O2 quantum yield was measured in aqueous solutions using fufuryl alcohol as a probe for the 1O2 production.
