The tragic death of Sheri Sangji in 2009 and subsequent 2012 settlement agreement marked the beginning of a dramatic effort to improve the safety culture across the UC campuses. Changing the focus of safety from one of checking boxes to making it an integral step in the research process was key in this transition. A natural consequence of this shift in focus is graduate students using their safety experience from graduate school to launch into a career as a safety professional. The transition from graduate student researcher in chemistry to a laboratory safety specialist is discussed.
