Chemical Valence is an iOS app designed to help students visualize symbolic representations of covalent molecules. Through in-classroom collaborative discussion, its learning modules and reflection questions can encourage knowledge integration of the underlying chemistry concepts needed to support student understanding of molecular structure. The impact of this teaching intervention on students’ learning was evaluated using within-group pre-test and post-test quiz scores. Students’ exam scores were also compared with scores of an historic control group that was taught by the same professor, but did not receive the same teaching intervention. To explore evidence of students’ knowledge integration processes, transcripts of in-class discussions and individual interviews were coded using a set of theoretically grounded categories and revised through methods of constant comparison. The results of this study will be shared along with observations on broader issues of effective design and use of mobile apps for learning.<br/> <br/>
