Lumazine has shown to have photodynamic cancer treatment applications due to the ability to cause cell death when irradiated. This research investigates the mechanism of the resulting cell death. Based upon other photodynamic therapy agents under investigation, the mechanisms causing cell death follow one or both of two pathways: destabilization of cell DNA and/or the formation of singlet oxygen. Using HPLC and HPLC-MS, we have monitored the products of the reaction between irradiated lumazine and adenine deoxyribose monophosphate (dAMP). The relationship of the products of the reaction have been monitored with respect to irradiation time, wavelength, oxygen concentration, and lumazine/DNA concentrations.
