The work summarizes our recent efforts in developing regenerable solid adsorbents based on the molecular basket concept which is termed as MBS for selectively removing H2S from CO2 containing gas streams such as biogas, landfill gas, syngas. The first generation of MBS (MBS-1) had high capacity for H2S adsorption. However, the co-existence of CO2 strongly inhibits the adsorption of H2S. Thus, a unique two-stage adsorption process was designed for removal of both CO2 and H2S. Considering the fact that not all the cases required CO2 removal, the additional CO2 adsorption stage induces more energy consumption and cost. So, we developed the second generation of MBS (MBS-2), which can selectively remove H2S from the gas streams even with high concentration of CO2. The major drawback, however, is its low adsorption capacity, making it un-practicable. Most recently, the third generation of MBS (MBS-3) was developed, which can also selectively remove H2S with the presence of CO2, but showed 10 times higher H2S capacity than that of MBS-2. More interestingly, the presence of CO2 even promoted H2S adsorption over MBS-3.
