The ionic compound [N(n-C10H21)(CH3)3][(C2F5SO2)2N] is a typical high-viscosity ionic liquid above 31 °C. Below this temperature it solidifies to what appears to be an optically clear glass. Despite the glass-like appearance, X-ray scattering also reveals many apparently crystalline diffraction peaks in the solid. We have applied a wide variety of experimental techniques to characterize both the structure and dynamics of this solid near room temperature. This talk will present the current understanding of this unusual ionic solid that is emerging from these studies.
