Near-infrared photodissociation spectra have been measured for the protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n, where n = 1-8. Clusters are produced in a pulsed-discharge supersonic expansion, mass selected, and studied by infrared laser photodissociation spectroscopy in the range of 3600-4550 and 4850-7350 cm-1. There is a broad absorption around 5300 cm-1, a sharp doublet near 7200 cm-1 and a weak sharper feature near 4100 cm-1 that vary in intensity and position with cluster size for n ≥ 2. The measured spectra are compared to anharmonic computations, second order vibrational perturbation theory and a local mode treatment of the OH stretches. Both methods capture key aspects of the observed spectra, yet have reasonable deficiencies in the quantitative description of all observed bands and their intensities.
