The reduction of carbon dioxide to energy rich molecules can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and serve as potential energy storage.  As demonstrated by others, Rhenium(I) bipyridine based catalysts offer efficient and selective reduction of carbon dioxide to CO over proton reduction to hydrogen.  For this reason, we have prepared and analyzed several Rhenium complexes featuring a variety of ligands, including phenanthroline, terpyridine, and 5-ethynyl bipyridine.  Cyclic voltammetry of these complexes was studied in the presence of carbon dioxide at a glassy carbon electrode in acetonitrile with and without Bronsted acids (water, methanol, and phenol).  Furthermore, electrochemical studies were performed with added photosensitizers, Ru(bpy) and Ir(ppy) complexes and BODIPY, to screen potential photo-induced reduction responses.  These results will be presented along with a comparison of our reduction current responses to that of the known dimethyl and di-<i>tert</i>-butyl Re(bpy-R)(CO)<sub>3</sub>Cl complexes.
