The conversion of inert, abundant molecules into chemical fuels represents an attractive solution for minimizing our carbon footprint, as energy is stored in chemical bonds of molecules that can be easily transported as renewable liquids. Toward this goal, we are developing earth-abundant, homogeneous catalysts that are capable of accessing kinetically favorable intramolecular multi-electron and multi-proton substrate functionalization pathways, through the use of <i>metal-oxide metalloligands</i>. We have recently reported the synthesis of a series of transition metal functionalized polyoxovanadate-alkoxide clusters. Electronic characterization of these heterometallic clusters via infrared and electronic absorption spectroscopies, as well as cyclic voltammetry, reveals a highly delocalized electronic structure, suitable for developing an understanding of the role of delocalized electron density during substrate activation.  Herein, we present our results related to the activation of small molecules across heterometal-functionalized polyoxovanadate-alkoxide clusters.<br/>
