Improving the kinetics of catalytic reactions involving oxygen is essential for addressing a range of important problems in energy conversion and storage technology.  Surface and near-surface structures often determine the performance in activity, selectivity, and stability of a heterogeneous catalyst regardless of the types of energy used (<i>i.e</i>., heat, electricity, and light). We recently have developed well-defined metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and metal oxide catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), <i>in situ</i> transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation are used to study the structure-property relationship.  I will present the design and control of atomic structures on surface of low-platinum group metal (PGM) and non-PGM catalysts towards ORR, and pyrochlore catalysts towards OER in acidic media, facilitated by using the in situ environmental TEM technique.
