Tris[(1-isopropylbenzimidazol-2-yl)dimethylsilyl]methane, [Tismi-PrBenz]H, has been employed to form metallacarbatrane compounds, as exemplified by the magnesium methyl and hydride complexes, [Tismi-PrBenz]MgMe and [Tismi-PrBenz]MgH. However, in addition to the κ4-coordination mode that affords the metallacarbatrane motif, hypodentate coordination modes are also possible. For example, the zinc counterparts, [κ3-Tismi-PrBenz]ZnMe and [κ3-Tismi-PrBenz]ZnH, exhibit only κ3-coordination. The coordination mode adopted by the [Tismi-PrBenz] ligand is not only a function of the metal, but also depends on the nature of additional substituent, as illustrated by the fact that the cadmium chloride complex [Tismi-PrBenz]CdCl adopts an atrane motif, whereas the bis(trimethylsilyl)amide derivative [κ3-Tismi-PrBenz]CdN(SiMe3)2 exhibits κ3-coordination. The use of the latter complex to provide access to a variety of other cadmium derivatives, as illustrated by the formation of the isocyanate derivative [Tismi-PrBenz]CdNCO upon reaction with CO2, will be described. The application of the [Tismi-PrBenz] ligand to other metals will also be discussed.
