Nitric oxide (NO) is a key biological messenger that helps regulate blood pressure, inhibit tumor growth, and control cardiac vasodilation. One of the ways nitric oxide is stored in the body is through dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs). Compounds such as Cys2Fe(NO)2 are used by the immune system against pathogens by releasing NO. Recently, there has been interest in the synthesis of DNICs that mimic structures found in biological systems. Using ligands such as tris- phosphines, three new DNICs were prepared. The syntheses were carried out by reacting Fe(CO)2(NO)2 with equimolar of the ligand at room temperature for 24 hours. Products of Fe(CO)(NO)2L (L= tris (o-methoxyphenyl) phosphine, 1, tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP), 2, and tris-2 furyl phosphine, 3) were isolated and characterized by IR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Single crystals of 1 and 2 were obtained from acetonitrile and methanol, respectively. X-ray crystal structures confirm the formation of monosubstituted products. Notably in 2, the carboxylic acid group was converted to an ester. Mechanistic consideration of such a conversion will be discussed.
