The cycloiridation of substrates bearing an aryl group has been widely explored giving a range of iridacycles with applications in catalysis. Although there are many examples of aryl based iridacycles bearing some form of chirality, most are obtained as racemic mixtures.<br/>We have recently reported the cycloiridation of a number of ferrocene and cobalt sandwich complex based oxazolines and imines resulting in highly diastereoselective C-H activation and iridacycle formation. These planar chiral and chiral-at-metal iridacycles undergo stereospecific ligand substitution resulting in an overall retention of configuration about the iridium centre.<br/>In addition to cycloiridation, the use of transmetallation can provide an alternative route to previously unobtainable metallocene based iridacycles. Mercurated precursors can be prepared in a diastereomerically pure fashion leading to iridacycles (without the need for further diastereotopic enrichment) upon transmetallation.
