Knowledge of the nature of an excited state is a prerequisite to a full understanding of a particular photochemical process. At room temperature, time-resolved resonance Rand time-resolved IR (TRIR) spectroscopy are powerful techniques to probe the structure and reactivity of excited states.  In this presentation we give. Recent results examining the solvent dependant photochemistry and photophysics of  [(diimine)Re(CO)4]+ (diamine = bpy or dppz) and show how both the interplay between excited states and the degree of photochemical substitution can be tuned.<br/>
