The reactive 16e metal fragment [Tp'RhL] where L = CNCH2CMe3 or PMe3 reacts with alcohols, amines, ketones, and esters to give a variety of adducts and oxidative addition products. Selectivity for the various types of activation products has been determined. Alcohols undergo O-H oxidative addition. Basic amines are found to bond via nitrogen, whereas less basic amines undergo N-H oxidative addition. Ketones and esters show a preference for a-keto methyl group C-H addition. The relative bond strengths for these substrates has been determined using kinetic techniques.
