The reversible binding of dinitrogen to the well-known Fe(DPPE)2HCl complex has been extensively studied. In our research, analogous complexes of Iron(II) with the tetrastyrylbisphosphinoethane (TSPE) ligand were studied with the goal of developing polymer stabilized materials for the reversible binding of small molecules and applying these materials to the removal of N2 from natural gas. Reactions of Fe(TSPE)2HCl with either sodium triflate or sodium tetraphenylborate in the presence of nitrogen led to the cationic dinitrogen complex, [Fe(TSPE)2H(N2)+]. This complex shows a quintet in the 1H NMR spectrum at -20.1 ppm and a singlet in the 31P NMR spectrum at 83 ppm. The styryl groups have allowed us to copolymerize the Fe(TSPE)2HCl complex with EGDMA and HEMA to form highly-porous, polymer-stabilized iron sites. Current efforts to characterize nitrogen binding to these polymers are ongoing.
