A number of iron(II) phosphine complexes have been investigated due to their ability to reversibly bind elemental nitrogen. This has been a rising point of interest because they can be used to separate nitrogen from natural gas. The problem with previously synthesized complexes is that they decompose during extended use. Fe(Divinylbenzylphosphinoethane)2Cl(X), where X = Cl or H, was explored as a polymer stabilized solution. A synthetic pathway has been developed to first synthesize the iron complex with X = Cl. This can then be converted to the complex where X = H. The complex with X = Cl shows no interaction with N2 at 1-4 atm and we are investigating interaction with nitrogen at higher pressures. We are also pursuing the reactivity of the complex where X=H at both atmospheric and elevated pressures of N2.
