2-Pyridinecarboxaldehyde N-oxide(poxal) is the starting material incondensation reactions producing N-oxide Schiff Bases. Coordination complexeswith N-oxide Schiff Bases are expected to have interesting biological and pharmaceutical potentials, such as in anticancer drugs or fungicides development. They also promise interesting magnetic propertiesin polynuclear complexes due to strong super-exchange mediated by the N-oxide group. All published syntheses for 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde N-oxide have low yields and/or use harsh reaction conditions. In the investigation of an alternative synthetic route, two interesting compounds are produced: a protected version of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde,2-(2-pyridine)-1,3-dioxolane, and a protected version of poxal, 2-(2-pyridine N-oxide)-1,3-dioxolane. The accessibility of 2-(2-pyridine)-1,3-dioxolane and 2-(2-pyridine N-oxide)-1,3-dioxolane to act as ligands in first row transition metal complexes has been analyzed computationally in previous work. Computations on the viability of the complexes to be synthesized were also evaluated. The synthesis of the complexes that were deemed experimentally viable will also be presented.
