A series of low-dimensional magnetic materials was prepared by combining 3d transition metals with two anionic ligands, monoatomic halide and four-atomic formate. Solvothermal synthesis allowed to produce single phase samples and grow large single crystals of the novel compounds. Detailed characterization of the magnetic properties, using SQUID magnetometry, performed on powder and oriented single crystal samples show complex anisotropic magnetic behavior. Neutron diffraction allow for unambiguous determination of the magnetic structure of the synthesized compounds. The general trend is that magnetic interactions within chains are ferromagnetic, but the interchain interactions depends on the nature of the transition metal, separating cations, and presence of additional formate linkers.
