To probe new gold(III) activations of C-H bonds, gold(III) complexes of N-(8-quinolinyl)amides and 2-tert-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline were synthesized. These complexes were chosen due to their potential for directing strong, sp3-hybridized C-H bonds toward gold(III). The N-(8-quinonyl)amides bonded to gold(III) in a bidentate manner while 2-tert-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline was monodentate. The two complexes of N-(8-quinolinyl)amides differ in the alkyl attached to the amide; one is a tert-butyl and the other is a 3-pentyl. The different alkyl groups affect the geometry and color of the compounds. The gold(III) complex with the 3-pentyl group has a geometry that allows for stabilization of the amide nitrogen lone pair through conjugation with the carbonyl; however, the t-butyl group of the other gold(III) complex enforces a geometry that is not conducive to the same conjugation stabilization. The destabilized ground state of the t-butyl-containing gold(III) complex allows low energy light absorption in the visible range, giving the complex a unique green color.
