A visible light initiated iodine transfer polymerization was successfully employed to prepare crosslinked poly(phosphine oxide). As, it is well documented that conventional radical homopolymerization of phosphonate bearing allyl monomers usually leads to low molecular weight oligomers, hence thiol-ene chemistry was introduced to obtain high molecular weight polymer.<br/><br/>Herein, a phosphate based multifunctional allyl derivative was designed and implemented in designing crosslinked polymer by visible light initiated iodo-ene chemistry. The polymerization kinetics of both reactive allyl and perfluoroiodide functional groups were examined using FTIR spectroscopy. On investigation it was observed that the consumption of allyl and perfluoroiodide functional groups did not proceed precisely stoichiometrically, even though the formulation consisted of 1:1 functional group stoichiometrically. However, with the presence of phosphorus within the crosslinked polymer, the network was found to be more air-stable and exhibited a higher glass transition temperature when compared to network polymer comprising of multifunctional carbon-based allyl ether derivative. The results were then compared to the thiol-ene based network polymer of glycol di(3-mercapto propionate) and phosphate based multifunctional allyl derivative. As expected, the thiol-ene based network polymer exhibited a low glass transition temperature compared to the iodo-ene polymers. In addition to the interesting bulk properties of these phosphine oxide-containing fluoropolymer materials, they also exhibit exciting surface properties as well. Goniometry revealed water contact angle of iodo-ene polymers exhibiting relative low surface energy due to the incorporation of the fluorinated alkyl groups in contrast to the thiol-ene based crosslinked polymer.
