Starbons® are a novel family of mesoporous materials discovered at GCCE, University of York. These materials derived from polysaccharides such as starch, alginic acid, pectin and hemicellulose, and have consolable surface functionalities ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. This novel Starbon® technology utilises the natural ability for polysaccharides to retain their organised structure during pyrolysis. The mesoporous Starbon® family consists of continuum of materials from polysaccharides to activated carbon. It has been proven recently that Starbon® are good adsorbers of metals and small molecules such as CO2, NH3, H2S, and SO2. The Starbon® materials are more efficient and selective alternative to other commercial options in trapping these gasses. The objective of this project is to apply Starbon® materials for the adsorption of small polarisable toxic molecules such as CCl4 CHCl3. Starbon® materials were prepared and characterised by different methods including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), TG-FTIR, simultaneous thermal analyser (STA) and liquid nitrogen adsorption methods. Protocols were developed for the investigation of the adsorption of the small polarisable molecules by applying standard STA-625 instrument. The influence of different conditions such as polarisable molecule concentration, adsorption temperature and the Starbon® nature on the adsorption of chosen gases were systematically investigated.
