Catalysis is a multi-disciplinary science that covers diverse areas from physics to engineering to organic chemistry to cell biology.  In spite of this broad impact, the various traditional areas are often unnecessarily siloed.  This talk will discuss ways in which we can break down some of these barriers.  In particular, we will discuss how the tools and perspectives of biochemistry and physical organic chemistry can inform our understanding of heterogeneous catalysis.<br/> <br/>We will focus on how Hammett studies can be used not only to identify reaction mechanisms, but to characterize the catalytic active site for benzyl alcohol oxidation over supported Au nanoparticles.  Experimental measurements are correlated with DFT calculations on simple model systems to show how tuning the electron density of Au nanoparticles impacts benzyl alcohol activity. Combined with Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters, we will show how these ideas can be used to identify changes in the number of active sites in a catalyst, and how supports can influence catalytic activity. <br/>
