One approach for a metal-mediated derivatization of fluorinated molecules is based on C−F activation reactions. In order to make C−F bond cleavage steps feasible other strong element−fluorine bonds such as Si−F bonds have to be formed. One strategy to activate the C-F bonds of alkanes in a homogeneous phase consists of reactions with Lewis-acidic silylium ions in the presence of tertiary silanes.<br/>We will report on C-F activation reactions of fluorinated alkanes and olefins at nanoscopic aluminum chlorofluoride (ACF), which resulted in hydrodefluorination, C-C coupling and germylation processes. The investigations involve an immobilisation of silanes or germanes at a Lewis-acidic surface to generate activated species, which then can induce bond-cleavage steps. Remarkably, the observed selectivities and reactivities differ considerably depending on the use of silanes or germanes. The results obtained by these heterogeneous conversions at the ACF surface will be compared with the reactivities of silylium and germylium species in a homogeneous phase.
