Results on the adsorption of water on transition metal and simple metal oxide surfaces are presented. We have used TPD (Temperature programmed desorption), LEED (Low Energy Electron Diffraction), IRAS (Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy) and single crystal calorimetry to study the adsorption of water. The standard models for dissociative and molecular adsorption are discussed. Parallel to the experimental work, theoretical studies are carried out and their results are mentioned as well.<br/>In a second part water formation within the confined space between a silica layer and a metal surface is studied in comparison to the same reaction on the open metal surface.<br/><br/>
